TTL Pt 1 & Power Ratios

TTL is defined as "through the lens", as in the flash is ON the camera and when you look through the viewfinder and take a picture, the flash meters the scene and decides itself how much flash to output (otherwise you manually input the exposure).



Purpose: To see if TTL really works... and how it works.

Set up: Flash is on camera, rim light--back lit--is the sun (180 degrees camera right/left).




Ambient exposure, no flash... basically the "test shot".


The TTL setting is at -2, so whatever the flash decided, you're telling it to put out -2 stops less light.


TTL setting is at -1.


TTL setting at normal.


TTL setting at +1


Seeing if TTL really works... by moving the model closer (all of the other shots were the same camera/flash-model distance). So instead of being at 10 ft --> 7.1 ft.


Does it still work? Yup.
Moving in closer still (7.1 ft --> 5 ft.)







Power Ratios--You can set the flash to output only a certain amount of light (a ratio of the amount it measured for itself through TTL that it should put out).

Flash ratio is set to 1:64, or 1/64 the full flash output power.


Flash ratio is at 1:32, 1/32 the full flash output power.


Flash ratio is at 1:16, 1/16 the full flash output power.


Flash ratio is at 1:8, or 1/8 the full flash output power


Flash ratio is at 1:4, or 1/4 the full output power


Flash output is at half power, so the ratio is 1:2


Flash at full output power, so the ratio is 1:1
