Editorial Layout

Purpose: To find a magazine style that we like, and shoot two images (one as a cover--vertical image, one as a spread--"double truck"--horizontal image) using three or more techniques that we used in class--culminating our skills and putting them to use.

Set up: First shot, have a flash set up right behind his head on a stand to blow out the background (make it high key--mostly bright/light colors) and a flash with a shoot-through umbrella on the left side to make a split lighting pattern--sort of; a little too much light on the right side to be a perfect split. Second shot, I have a diffusion panel hovering above the set with a flash pointed down to illuminate it all--sort of like the set up in "small product" that we did last session (can upload on request). Both lighting set-ups only done with the help of Bryant Swanstrom.

Model: All props in the second shot are Bryant's, Giorgio Armani brand (obviously). Model in the first shot is Bryant Swanstrom (still need to get a model release).

Like the cover of GQ ("Gentlemen's Quarterly"). Notice the watch.

Same subject (watch) in a completely different composition, lighting...

Assignment: Three techniques used were power ratios (see post, bottom half), diffusion (general lighting technique), and key shifting (previous class, PHT103). Graded and critiqued in class. Received A's for both images and an A for overall "layout".
